With Illinois losing to Alabama on Tuesday night, the Big Ten is now out of all postseason tournaments besides the NCAA Tournament.

On Tuesday night, Illinois headed on the road to face Alabama in this year's NIT. After getting down big in the 1st Half, the Illini could never recover and ultimately went down to the Crimson Tide to end their season. It was a downright bad effort by Illinois and the team looked flat. In a "do or die" situation, the Illini came up very small and now the program will look to next season to finally get things right.

The loss was certainly a bad one for the Illinois program, but it was also significant for the Big Ten. Despite landing a nation's best 7 teams in the NCAA Tournament, the conference put just one team into the NIT and had multiple teams turn down CBI bids. As a result, Illinois was the only Big Ten team in the "other" postseason tournaments.

With Illinois' early departure from postseason play, it seemed like a good time to take a step back and reflect on not only the performance of Illinois, but also the fact that the Big Ten could only get one NIT bid and the decisions of multiple Big Ten programs to turn down CBI bids.

But one note before I jump into these comments. The Big Ten still had a good regular season. No matter how much anyone claims or may like for the other tournaments to improve their significance, the NCAA Tournament rules all. I have long been a believer in the concept that the NIT and CBI have significance, but a bid to the Big Dance is still worth more than even an NIT title. It's just the nature of the game.

The NIT

On Sunday night, when it was announced that the Big Ten only received one bid to the NIT, I have to admit I was surprised. Nobody can honestly claim to know exactly who the NIT would opt to take, but considering that Michigan and Minnesota both appeared to have done enough to edge themselves in the field, it was a little jarring to see only one team make the cut.

Still, Illinois made it and entered as a #3 seed. A bit disappointing considering that some had them as one of the very last teams out of the NCAA Tournament field, but it was still a solid seed and they would be favored in seeding for at least the first round.

What We Learned From: Illinois at Alabama

What did we learn from Alabama's win over Illinois on Tuesday?

Of course, with Illinois' exit, they went 0-1 in the NIT and the Big Ten is now officially done in the NIT. Not all of this can be credited to Illinois, but the fact that neither Michigan nor Minnesota could sneak in was a much more significant blow. Instead of the conference having 10 teams in the NCAA and NIT, they had just eight. Plus, considering that Michigan played very well down the stretch and that Minnesota has been able to get up for some games, maybe you get one or even both of those teams into the 2nd Round.

A lot has been made of the fact that success in the NIT one year does not indicate success in the next, but it certainly indicates the depth of your league. Plus, it's hard to imagine that winning games in the NIT somehow hurts a team. Last year, the Big Ten was the nation's best conference and a big part of that was the fact that two of its middle teams (Illinois and Minnesota) were able to win a bunch of games in the NIT. Minnesota won the championship and Illinois won its first game despite playing on the road.

The Big Ten had plenty of quality teams this year overall, but to be able to send teams that finished 8th, 9th, and 11th in the conference standings to the NIT would have been big and to have them win games there would have been even bigger. Instead, the only thing the conference got out of its NIT appearance was its 8th place team going on the road and losing to an Alabama team that tied for 8th in the SEC. Is that a huge blow to the league? No, but it's certainly not the way the conference wanted to start the postseason.

The CBI

The other postseason tournament that the Big Ten may have participated in was this year's CBI. However, Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, and Penn State all rejected any potential bids and thus, no Big Ten teams ended up participating, which has led to some debate.

The biggest debate about the CBI is whether it makes sense for Power Five programs to participate. There is the upside of playing in more games and having the potential to add to your win total, but there is also the downside of having to foot the bill for these games and the fact that there is not a whole lot to gain. Penn State and Purdue both recently participated and both suffered embarrassing defeats while participating. It can be worth it if you win out or at least go far enough to face another big name team, but if you lose early, it can be a huge hit to your program's reputation and potentially recruiting.

For me, I think it depends more on the circumstances of your team on whether to accept a bid, but unless your team really has not been to the postseason in quite some time or you think a few extra games really could help, it just does not make a lot of sense. I think this is also reflected on the Big Ten as well. Yeah, the conference could grab a few more wins and perhaps make some stats look nicer, but the significance here is even less than the NIT, which is already a huge step below the NCAA Tournament. Essentially, it might be nice to say more teams made the postseason, but the significance of a run in the CBI certainly isn't that huge for a conference like the Big Ten.

Overall

There is no doubt that the Big Ten's postseason performance outside of the NCAA Tournament selections has been underwhelming so far. Perhaps we will forget this if the Big Ten makes a big mark over the weekend, but instead of having potentially three teams making a significant impact in the NIT, the conference is out after just one game due to a bad loss. Most have viewed this as a down year for the Big Ten and the start of the postseason has certainly not done much to change that.

The Fighting Illini's season ends with an embarrassing loss to the Crimson Tide in the first round of the NIT.

The Illinois Fighting Illini and the Alabama Crimson Tide met in the first round of the NIT. Alabama was playing with an interim coach on Tuesday and we weren't sure what to expect from them. Illinois on the other hand was disappointed with how they played in the Big Ten Tournament and was looking to make up for it in the NIT.

The Crimson Tide took control of this game from the opening tip and never gave the Fighting Illini a chance to breathe. Alabama went on a 23-4 run to start the game, and they never looked back from there. Illinois had a hard time sustaining any momentum in this one. Alabama coasted to a one-sided 79-58 win.

What We Learned

Effort May Have Been An Issue In This Game

It is hard to play in the consolation tournament, but you still have to find a way to compete. The Fighting Illini didn't come out with the attitude and spirit needed to win. They came out flat and played uninspired basketball. Alabama, on the other hand, came out with something to prove. That was the difference in this one. One team came out with the intensity needed to compete in the postseason and the other came out flat. Sure, there was more than effort that decided this game, but it's not often you see a team look as flat as Illinois looked in March.

The Fighting Illini can go eight minutes without scoring

Illinois' offense struggled all night, especially in the first half. The Crimson Tide were able to capitalize on Illinois' lack of scoring by going on a 20-0 run in the opening minutes of the game and Illinois was never able to fully recover from that run. They needed someone to step up on offense and stop the bleeding, but never found that answer. An eight minute period does not decide a game, but it sure can have a substantial impact and it did on Tuesday.

This isn't how Nnanna Egwu and Rayvonte Rice deserved to end their college basketball careers

Both players have had successful careers at Illinois. They deserved to go out with a better effort than this. It has been a disappointing season for Rice especially with his suspension that came earlier this season. That shouldn't take away from what he was able to do on the court for Illinois. He averaged over 15 points a game in the 2 seasons he was with the Illini and was arguably their most reliable scoring option. His ability to score from anywhere on the court will certainly be missed.

Egwu has been a significant contributor for the Illini ever since he stepped on campus. He always gives it his all when he's on the court. Egwu did that again on Tuesday night, unfortunately he didn't get that same effort in return. It will hard to replace his leadership on the court next season.

Overall

This was an awful way for the Illini to end the season. They lost 6 of their last 8 games to close out their year. They never found a way to get on the same page and didn't play up to their potential. Many had high hopes for this team a little over a month ago. It's a shame they weren't able to put it all together.

Take a look at the history of the Illini in the NIT.

Last weekend, Illinois was knocked out of the Big Ten Tournament by Michigan and as a result, went into Selection Sunday with many doubts about making the NCAA Tournament. As it turns out, Illinois' 19-13 overall record was not good enough to make the cut and the team found themselves heading to the NIT. Illinois will be the only Big Ten team participating in this year's NIT and it will be the 6th appearance in program history. The Illini are a combined 8-5 all-time in the NIT.

The Early Years

Before 1996, the Illini made just two appearances in the NIT and both came in the early 1980s. In 1980, Illinois entered the NIT with a 16-12 overall record and came in having lost 4 of their final 6 games. However, they had arguably their best run in the NIT in program history after beating Loyola (IL), Illinois State, and Murray State. The first two games were relatively convincing wins for the Illini, but the win over Murray State was a tight battle. Unfortunately, in the NIT semi-final, Illinois fell short against Minnesota, but they did win the 3rd place game against UNLV.

The Illini also made an appearance in the postseason NIT in 1982 after a 16-10 season. They came into the postseason on a two game winning streak after beating Iowa and Northwestern and maintained that momentum with a dominating win over Long Island University. However, a disappointing year for Illinois took another hit as they exited in their second game with a tight loss to Dayton.

Recent Years

Following a hiatus from the NIT for 13 seasons, the Illini made another appearance in 1996 after finishing the regular season with an 18-12 record. Illinois came in with little momentum after losing 3 of their final 4 games. Unfortunately for the team, the season ended on a dud with a loss to Alabama in the first round.

The next appearance for Illinois in the NIT came in 2010 after going 18-13 in the regular season and 1-1 in the Big Ten Tournament with a win over Wisconsin and a loss to Ohio State. Illinois got off to a hot start in the NIT with solid wins on the road against Stony Brook and against Kent State, but for the second time in program history, Illinois would end their season in the NIT against Dayton after a 6 point loss.

The final appearance for Illinois in the NIT before this year was just last season in 2014 after going 18-13 in the regular season and splitting their Big Ten Tournament games against Indiana and Michigan. Unfortunately for Illinois, the team was unable to host home games due to arena renovations and instead was forced to play on the road. They got past their first game against Boston University, but fell short on the road against Clemson.

Moving Forward

This season, Illinois enters the postseason at 19-13 overall after coming off a devastating loss to Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament. They will face the #6 seeded Alabama Crimson Tide and if they win, they will face either Miami (Fl) or NC Central. Unfortunately for Illinois, they will be repeating some of the challenges of last season as due to renovations, they will be forced to go on the road to Alabama. As a result, the Crimson Tide are considered solid favorites in the game and a potential return trip to Miami - the Illini lost on the road to Miami earlier this season - certainly does not look like an easy game either.

The key for Illinois to grab a win on Tuesday night will be guarding Alabama point guard Levi Randolph and big man Jimmie Taylor. Randolph has an offensive rating of 121.4 this season and Taylor has a 16.6 rebounding rate and a 9.2 blocking rate. The play of Nnanna Egwu will be vital to not only playing solid defense on Taylor, but also to get buckets inside and get around Taylor's solid defense.

This season certainly did not go the way Illinois fans hoped, but there is still the potential to end things on a positive note, build depth for next season, and beat at least one Power Five team on the road.

Alabama Scouting Report

There's a new coach in Tuscaloosa.

Alabama will be playing with a new coach on Tuesday night. The Crimson Tide fired six year head coach Anthony Grant this past Sunday. John Brannen will take over the coaching duties on an interim basis to close out the season for Alabama. We'll see how this team responds given the coaching situation. I wouldn't be surprised if we saw an inspired Alabama team on Tuesday night.

Alabama peaked at the wrong time.

The Crimson Tide started the off the year with a 12-3 record, but closed out the season going 6-11. They've lost four out of their last six games as well. Like Illinois, Alabama was also an early exit in their conference tournament. The Crimson Tide didn't end their year like they would've liked, but they can end on a positive note with a couple wins in the NIT.

Make the Crimson Tide shoot 3's.

Alabama is at it's best when they are attacking the rim and drawing fouls. They've scored 70% of their points from inside the three point line or at the foul line. They aren't comfortable shooting the three ball and are 258th in the country in three point percentage. The way to slow them down offensively is by shutting down the paint and making them a three point shooting team.

Alabama player to watch.

Senior guard Levi Randolph is their go to player. He leads the team in points with just over 15 points a game adn also isn't afraid to fight for rebounds, leading the team with an average of 5 boards a game.

What to watch for

How will Illinois adjust to playing in the NIT.

Let's be honest, nobody starts the season with the goal of making the NIT. The Fighting Illini were on the bubble before they lost to Michigan in the NCAA Tournament. It's hard to get motivated after missing out on something you've been striving for all season. We'll see if the Fighting Illini will come out motivated to play this one.

Can the Fighting Illini win on the road?

Illinois hasn't been the best road team this season and are 2-8 in true road games this season. We'll see if they can get that number up before the season ends.

New NIT shot clock rules should help Illinois.

College basketball will experiment with a 30 second shot clock in the NIT. This should help out Illinois considering they don't normally use the full 35 seconds anyway. Alabama on the other hand plays at a much slower pace and is 297th in adjusted tempo. This could prove to be a problem for them.

Following the NIT's selection show on Sunday night, it was learned that three teams from the Big Ten that appeared to be in serious consideration for bids were not selected.
