The Big Ten only had one game on Thursday night. It was played in Minneapolis between Minnesota and New Orleans.
Let’s take a look at what happened.
Game of the Night:
-Minnesota Golden Gophers 97, New Orleans Privateers 64
It’s been a bumpy start so far for the Gophers. While the team’s preseason expectations weren’t all that high, fans were hoping Minnesota could find a way to overachieve and get back in the postseason discussion. Unfortunately, things hadn’t been all that encouraging through the team’s first six games. Minnesota had avoided any bad losses, but was just 0-2 against quality competition.
That set the Gophers up with a final home stand before Big Ten play began on Thursday. And while Minnesota couldn’t deliver a marquee win against New Orleans, it could take care of business and avoid a bad loss.
The game itself would prove one sided, as the Gophers got up early and never looked back. Minnesota eventually went on to win by a 97-64 margin. Dawson Garcia had an impressive performance with 15 points and four rebounds. However, it was freshman Cam Christie that turned heads, as he finished with 20 points in just 24 minutes of action. Fans will hope he continues to emerge over the coming weeks.
Minnesota improved to 5-2 overall with the win. The team will now prepare for a challenging road trip to Ohio State over the weekend. KenPom has Minnesota as double-digit underdogs, so it’s expected to be quite challenging for the team. However, we’ve seen more than enough upsets in college basketball to know anything’s possible. One interesting note will be on the Ohio State side, as Jamison Battle faces the Gophers for the first time since transferring from Minnesota to Columbus.
