11/27 Big Ten Preview: League Tuneups

Preview all of Monday’s Big Ten action.

NCAA Basketball: Basketball Hall of Fame Tip-Off-Rhode Island at Northwestern Mark Smith-USA TODAY Sports

The Big Ten only has three games on Monday and all three come against relatively underwhelming competition. The most intriguing game will likely be in Evanston.

Let’s take a look at the schedule.

Game of the Day:

-Northern Illinois Huskies at Northwestern Wildcats

  • Time/TV: 8:00 PM ET (BTN+)
  • KenPom Spread: Northwestern by 10

Through five games, things have been pretty productive for the Wildcats. The team is 4-1 and has a quality win over Dayton. The Wildcats look like they have an outside shot at another NCAA Tournament bid. The question will be whether they can upset enough teams at home. That effort will begin on Friday at home against Purdue.

However, before the Wildcats can meet the Boilers, they need to get past Northern Illinois.

The Huskies enter Monday with a decent resume as well. The team is 5-1 overall with its only loss coming on the road against Marquette. It also knocked off a top 100 Appalachian State team in early November. The key has been David Colt in the backcourt. He’s an undersized guard, but dominates the team in usage. Philmon Gebrewhit is another player to watch. The two make up a pretty solid backcourt.

The key here will be how Boo Buie and Ty Berry defend Northern Illinois’ backcourt. If they can hold up, this should be an easy win. However, the two can be inconsistent. There’s also a chance for Matthew Nicholson to make a mark against a smaller frontcourt.

  • Pick: Northwestern

The Rest:

-Saint Peter’s Peacocks at Rutgers Scarlet Knights

  • Time/TV: 7:00PM ET (BTN+)
  • KenPom Spread: Rutgers by 14

The Scarlet Knights enter this one after a week off. Rutgers has underwhelmed a tad to start the season, but have been gaining some steam over recent weeks. This is a final chance to build some momentum before a pivotal home game against Illinois on Saturday.

Like all the games on Monday night, Rutgers should win. The player to watch will be Gavin Griffiths. His offensive role has been expanding by the game. This is a chance to get a little more comfortable before Big Ten play begins. The player to watch on Saint Peter’s is Latrell Reid in the backcourt.

  • Pick: Rutgers

-Western Illinois Leathernecks at Wisconsin Badgers

  • Time/TV: 7:00PM ET (BTN)
  • KenPom Spread: Wisconsin by 26

There isn’t much to preview on this one. Wisconsin is a significant favorite and rightfully so. The Leathernecks are one of the worst teams in the country. If the Badgers even play decently, this should be a lopsided affair. Epect the bench to be unloaded.

  • Pick: Wisconsin
