Earlier this week, the Minnesota Golden Gophers got some exciting news as D2 transfer Daniel Ogele announced he would be committing to the program. He joins what is starting to become an interesting roster for new head coach Ben Johnson.

Ogele originally came out of Chicago, Illinois and spent time at multiple schools before coming to Minnesota. This included time at the Naval Academy Preparatory School and Mercyhurst University, which is a small D2 school in Pennsylvania. While there, he averaged 10.5 points and 4.8 rebounds per game. He is listed at 6-foot-7 and 220 pounds.

This is true of most of Minnesota’s recent additions, but it’s pretty difficult to project what Ogele could become with the Gophers. While he was a solid player at the D2 level, he’s going to be competing against significantly better talent this season with Minnesota. Ogele will also be joining a roster in significant transition, meaning he might be thrust into uncomfortable situations earlier than Johnson might like to see. Fans should be hoping he can develop into a reliable depth option by season’s end.

Johnson and his staff still have their work cut out to build the roster moving forward, but Gopher fans have to be excited about bringing Ogele into the fold.
