Minnesota’s Both Gach Enters Transfer Portal

The Gophers are set to lose a key piece.

Minnesota got some disappointing news this week as fans learned guard Both Gach would be entering the transfer portal. This loss isn’t surprising with the coaching change, but it’s a notable one, as Gach was one of the team’s most productive players last season.

During last season, Gach started 16 games and averaged 22.7 minutes, 6.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.9 assists per game. He only played one season with the Gophers after transferring in from Utah. His departure leaves an even bigger hole for new head coach Ben Johnson to fill in the backcourt after the team also lost star guard Marcus Carr and a handful of other contributors.

Given the massive roster turnover for the Gophers this offseason, it’s hard to say how much this departure could impact the team. Had Gach returned, there’s little debating he would have earned a spot in the starting lineup. However, Minnesota’s going to be in rebuilding mode next season, regardless of whether Gach was there or not, so it’s hard to say his departure will impact the team too significantly.

Expect the coaching staff to be active in trying to find a scholarship replacement. We’ll have to stay tuned to see how things sort out.
