Utah Transfer Ian Martinez Commits To Maryland

Maryland landed a key transfer pickup.

Earlier this week, the Maryland Terrapins got some exciting news as Utah transfer Ian Martinez announced that he would be committing to the program. Martinez adds a nice depth piece to Maryland’s backcourt for what could be a loaded Terp squad.

Martinez only spent one season with the Utes, but was relatively productive there as a freshman. He averaged 15.8 minutes, 5.2 points, and 1.9 rebounds per game in 25 games last season. Martinez was also highly regarded as a recruit, ranking as a four-star and the 67th best player in the 2020 recruiting class by 247Sports.

Considering the significant roster overhauls occurring across college basketball, it’s hard to say how Martinez might contribute for next year’s Terps. However, he clearly has some talent and upside and joins what should be a really interesting Terp squad next year. Fatts Russell figures to be the main backcourt contributor after transferring in and Eric Ayala should be back, but everything else is pretty uncertain. Adding a piece like Martinez should alleviate some of the depth concerns.

Mark Turgeon and his staff likely aren’t done with the transfer market, but Terp fans have to be excited about where things sit at the moment.
