The Hawkeyes got some disappointing news this week as fans learned forward Jack Nunge would be entering the transfer portal. Nunge had shown some serious potential for the Hawkeyes this season and was thought to be one of the players in line to take some of Luka Garza’s minutes when he went to the NBA. His departure would certainly leave a mark on a program hoping to continue its recent success.

Nunge was a solid contributor for the Hawkeyes when he made it on the floor, but struggled significantly with injuries. He played in a total of 61 games over his four years with the program and averaged 6.1 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. He was one of the team’s more productive bench players this year before going out with injury once again.

Fran McCaffery had the following to say about the news:

“Jack and I had a heartfelt meeting today,” said McCaffery. “No person should ever have to go through what Jack has endured the last 16 months and my heart aches for him. Jack expressed his desire to continue his education and complete his eligibility at a school closer to his family. My staff and I fully support his decision and will help every way possible with his transition. Jack is beloved and respected by everyone in our program and has been a valuable teammate the past four years.”

Fortunately for Hawkeye fans, the staff should still have some key players returning and a few months on the transfer portal to find a replacement. We’ll have to stay tuned to see how things sort out in the weeks and months ahead.
