The Big Ten released its weekly award winners for week 13 of the regular season and three teams split the awards. Iowa’s Luka Garza and Ohio State’s Duane Washington were named Co-Big Ten Players of the Week and Michigan’s Hunter Dickinson was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
Garza had quite a performance this week, averaging 26.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in Iowa’s wins over Wisconsin and Penn State. The win over the Badgers was particularly important, coming on the road against a ranked team. Garza also scored his 2,118th career point against Penn State, becoming Iowa’s all-time leading scorer. This is the fifth time he’s earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors in his career.
Washington also had an impressive performance, averaging 25.5 points per game in games against Penn State and Michigan. Most notably, he scored 30 points in the team’s epic game against Michigan on Sunday afternoon. This is the first time he’s earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors in his career.
The Freshman of the Week honors were also well deserved. Dickinson once again put up massive numbers for Michigan, averaging 16.0 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game in Michigan’s wins over Rutgers and Ohio State. He also made a number of key players down the stretch against the Buckeyes. This is already the seventh time he’s earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors in his career. That mark ties him for the second-most in Big Ten history, behind Ohio State’s Jared Sullinger.
Congratulations are in order for all three players. Don’t be surprised if these three show back up on this list given how they have played to date.
