The AP and USA Today Coaches’ polls released earlier this week for Week Seven of the season and seven Big Ten teams were fortunate enough to make the cut. It’s an incredible achievement for the league and that’s not even to mention the fact a few other teams received top 25 votes as well.
Here is where the Big Ten landed:
Week Seven AP Poll:
- No. 5 - Iowa
- No. 8 - Wisconsin
- No. 10 - Michigan
- No. 12 - Illinois
- No. 15 - Rutgers
- No. 16 - Minnesota
- No. 23 - Michigan State
- Receiving Votes: Ohio State, Northwestern, Indiana
Week Seven USA Today Coaches’ Poll
- No. 7 - Iowa
- No. 9 - Michigan
- No. 10 - Wisconsin
- No. 12 - Illinois
- No. 14 - Rutgers
- No. 17 - Minnesota
- Receiving Votes: Northwestern, Michigan State, Ohio State
While it was disappointing to see teams like Northwestern and Ohio State drop out of the top 25, the league still performed extraordinarily well. Seven teams in the top 25 and six teams in the top 16 is incredible. And that doesn’t even mention teams like Michigan State, Northwestern, and Ohio State hanging around at the fringe of the top 25.
Perhaps the biggest question is how long the league can keep this many teams in top 25 contention. With conference play currently ongoing, it seems likely some of these teams will simply have too many losses to remain in the top 25. However, we will have to wait and see if that holds true. After all, this is quite an unusual season.
