1/12 Big Ten Preview: Top-10 Showdown In Ann Arbor

NCAA Basketball: Wisconsin at Michigan Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

COVID-19 issues caused the Rutgers at Penn State game to be cancelled/postponed, so just one matchup is on for tonight, but it is quite the game!

Game of the Day:

-No. 9 Wisconsin Badgers vs. No. 7 Michigan Wolverines

  • Time/TV: 7:00 p.m. EST (ESPN)

What was originally a Tuesday double-header has become a lone matchup between titans at the top of the Big Ten conference standings. 10-2 Wisconsin (4-1 in Big Ten) is in Ann Arbor tonight to take on 10-0 Michigan (5-0 in Big Ten).

The Badgers enter this matchup after a double-overtime scare in Madison against Indiana. The Badgers shot just 42.4 percent from the field, but managed to finish out the game 8-19 from three. However, Wisconsin shot just 4-14 during regulation, good for 28.6 percent from deep before going 4-for-5 in two extra periods to help bury the Hoosiers.

Michigan, meanwhile, is coming off a longer break than expected after a cancelled/postponed game against Penn State that would have followed an 82-57 thrashing of Minnesota. The Wolverines held Marcus Carr, who averages20.9 points per game, to just 14. Meanwhile, Michigan shot a blistering 56.9 percent from the field. The Wolverines did struggle from deep, though, as they shot just 30.8 percent despite averaging 35.8 on the season.

The Badgers might be able to capitalize on Michigan’s poor shooting from deep. The Wolverines rank 12th in the conference defensively in three-point shooting, and just 7th in shooting percentage themselves from deep. Meanwhile, Wisconsin ranks 8th in the conference defensing the three-point shot and 4th in percentage shooting.

It’s a battle of heavy-weights, however, with Michigan at risk of falling into a three-way tie for first with Wisconsin and Iowa if the Wolverines suffer a loss. Wisconsin, meanwhile, would move to 4-2 on the season in conference play with a loss and fall behind 5-2 Illinois, at least temporarily.

  • Pick: Wisconsin
