When teams have open scholarships entering a season they typically award one of their walk-ons with a scholarship for that season. With Michigan State finding out Xavier Tillman was remaining in the NBA Draft, that meant Tom Izzo and the Spartans had an available scholarship for the season.
Michigan State announced earlier this week that that scholarship was given to redshirt junior Jack Hoiberg, the son of Nebraska head coach Fred Hoiberg.
“This was not given, he earned this,” Izzo said in a press release from the school. “He has been unbelievable since he came here. Jack didn’t just have this given to him. He has worked so hard and deserves it.”
Hoiberg played in 13 games last season, averaging 1.5 points and 0.9 assists per game in limited action. The guard did start one game, with Izzo letting him start when the Spartans played at Nebraska.
