On Thursday, the Michigan State Spartans got some exciting news as top 100 prospect Jaden Akins committed to the program. He is yet another massive pickup for Tom Izzo this summer, who has been absolutely killing it on the recruiting trail lately.

Akins comes out of Farmington, Michigan and is rated as a four-star prospect and the second-best player in the state by 247Sports. The recruiting site also lists him at 6-foot-3 and 160 pounds. Along with Michigan State, he also had offers from DePaul, Florida, Georgia Tech, Iowa, Louisville, Michigan, and Xavier among others.

This is a big pickup for a few reasons. To start, Akins is a really nice player in his own right. He’s rated 70th nationally and should help fill a key piece on the depth chart. With Cassius Winston’s departure, there are a lot of questions about how Michigan State will look in the backcourt in the years to come and Akins helps address that concern.

Additionally, Akins secures the top two in-state 2021 prospects for the Spartans and pushes Michigan State’s 2021 class up to fourth nationally and atop the Big Ten. And with an incredible class waiting in 2022, this group could help set up a great run for Izzo and the Spartans for years to come.

Izzo and his staff still have their work cut out for the 2021 class, but Spartan fans have to be excited about bringing Akins into the fold.
