The Big Ten has a pretty interesting slate on Friday, featuring five games and one marquee matchup for the conference. Fans will get to see Wisconsin go on the road to face Marquette and another intriguing teams like Michigan State and Purdue in action.
Let’s take a look at the schedule.
Game of the Day:
-No. 4 Wisconsin Badgers at Marquette Golden Eagles
- Time/TV: 7:00PM ET (FS1)
- KenPom Spread: Wisconsin by 1
Wisconsin has only played three games so far this season, but has looked utterly dominant in all three. The Badgers scored a 10-point win on opening night and followed that up with even more convincing wins over the next week. However, things are about to get much tougher as the team goes on the road to face a feisty Marquette squad.
Marquette is 2-1 after losing to Oklahoma State on Tuesday. The Golden Eagles were 18-12 overall last season and are led by a litany of old Big Ten recruiting targets like DJ Carton, Jamal Cain, and Theo John. The team’s backcourt is efficient and generally play well outside the arc. Like Wisconsin, this team is really experienced with numerous upperclassmen contributors. There is no reliance dependence on underclassmen in Milwaukee.
The matchup to watch is going to be upfront. Can John slow down Micah Potter and a really experienced Badger frontline? Wisconsin needs to exploit what figures to be an advantage there. If not, this one could go down to the wire. Marquette won two of the last three matchups, but Wisconsin won last November. The Badgers will hope to make it two in a row.
- Pick: Wisconsin
The Rest:
-Saint Peter’s Peacocks at Maryland Terrapins
- Time/TV: 3:00 PM ET (BTN)
- KenPom Spread: Maryland by 14
This was a late rescheduling after Maryland’s game with George Mason got cancelled. However, it does look like a relatively intriguing “buy” game. The Terps will enter as significant favorites, but St. Peter’s does have a little spark. The Peacocks are coming off two straight wins, including a nice win over La Salle. The matchup to watch will be between Matthew Lee and Eric Ayala in the backcourt.
- Pick: Maryland
-Detroit Titans at No. 8 Michigan State Spartans
- Time/TV: 5:00 PM ET (BTN)
- KenPom Spread: Michigan State by 23
After beating Duke on the road on Tuesday, Spartan fans probably couldn’t be riding any higher going into a matchup with Detroit on Friday. Michigan State is playing great basketball and looks like it could be in position to contend for another Big Ten title.
As to the game on Friday, there isn’t a ton to be intrigued about here. Michigan State is a significant favorite and should walk away with a victory. Perhaps the lone question here is how Detroit performs. The Titans will open their season in East Lansing, so nobody’s quite sure what to expect. Not a fun spot for Tom Izzo to be in.
- Pick: Detroit
-Valparaiso Crusaders at Purdue Boilermakers
- Time/TV: 7:00 PM ET (BTN)
- KenPom Spread: Purdue by 16
After a 43-point win on Tuesday, Purdue will resume action on Friday against an underwhelming Valpariso squad. The Crusders are better than your average “buy” opponent, but they’re still 0-2 and well outside the top 150 on KenPom. They also lack the size to compete with a massive Purdue team ranking 14th nationally in average height. Expect a dominant night on the boards and in the paint for the Boilermakers.
- Pick: Purdue
-North Dakota Fighting Hawks at Minnesota Golden Gophers
- Time/TV: 9:00 PM ET (BTN)
- KenPom Spread: Minnesota by 22
After a close one against Loyola Marymount on Monday night. Gopher fans are hoping for a more comfortable win in this one. And the good news is that’ll probably end up happening. North Dakota enters this game as a pretty sizable underdog. The matchup to watch will be upfront. Can Liam Robbins slow down Mitchell Sueker and Filip Rebraca? If so, Minnesota should be in pretty good shape in this one.
- Pick: North Dakota
