The Big Ten released its weekly award winners for week four of the regular season and two teams ended up splitting the awards. Northwestern’s Boo Buie was named Big Ten Player of the Week and Purdue’s Mason Gillis was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
Buie had a remarkable performance this week. The Wildcat guard averaged 22.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, and 4.0 assists per game in Northwestern’s wins over Quincy and Michigan State. His performance against the Spartans was particularly impressive, as he scored 30 points and was very well the difference in Northwestern pulling off the upset. This is the first time he’s earned Player of the Week accolades in his career.
Meanwhile, Gillis also had a big week. He averaged 9.0 points and 4.5 rebounds per game for the Boilermakers as the team went on to beat a ranked Ohio State squad and Notre Dame in the Crossroads Classic. This is the first time Gillis has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week during his career. However, it doesn’t seem like it will be the last.
Congratulations are in order for both players. Don’t be surprised if these two show back up on this list given how they have played to date.
