12/16 Big Ten Recap: Purdue Upsets Ohio State

Recap all the Big Ten action from Wednesday.

NCAA Basketball: Ohio State at Purdue Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports

The Big Ten only had one game on Wednesday, but it was a big one. A top 20 Ohio State team went on the road to face off against a desperate Purdue squad hoping for the team’s first marquee win of the season.

Let’s take a look at what happened.

Game of the Night:

-Purdue Boilermakers 67, No. 20 Ohio State Buckeyes 60

While things started off really well for Ohio State in this one, things regressed soon thereafter. The Buckeyes held an 18-15 lead approximately 10 minutes into the game, but Purdue dominated things after that. The Boilermakers took control by half and never looked back. An 11-1 run in the second half really sealed things off. All told, Purdue grabbed a 67-60 win over a ranked Buckeye squad.

The start of the show in this one was Trevion Williams. He came off the bench yet again and was absolutely electric throughout the matchup. The big man finished with 16 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists on the night and had an 113 offensive rating. Eric Hunter also had a nice performance with 15 points and two assists.

For Purdue, this was a really valuable win. The Boilermakers blew opportunities at marquee wins against Clemson and Miami (FL) earlier this season, so taking care of business here gets things back on track. Beating Ohio State should also get more valuable as the year goes on. The Buckeyes are still playing with a limited roster and could get hot later this season. Scoring a win here could look even better in a few months.

On the other side, Ohio State fell to 5-1 overall and 0-1 in league play with the loss. And while falling to Purdue is disappointing, it’s hard to get too down. The Buckeyes are playing without two of the team’s best players in EJ Liddell and Seth Towns. It would be hard for any team to win much with players like that sidelined. It’s not an excuse, it’s reality.

Moving forward, Purdue will get a few days off before returning to action on Saturday in Indianapolis against Notre Dame. Ohio State will also play on Saturday on a neutral court. The Buckeyes will face off against UCLA.

Cancelled/Postponed:

-Northern Iowa Panthers at No. 12 Wisconsin Badgers

This would have been a fun one. Instead, Wisconsin played Loyola (Chicago) at home on Tuesday. The Badgers won that game. Don’t expect this one to be rescheduled.
