11/29 Big Ten Preview: Rutgers Hosts Hofstra

Preview all of Sunday’s Big Ten action.

NCAA Basketball: Sacred Heart at Rutgers Vincent Carchietta-USA TODAY Sports

The Big Ten had an exciting day on the gridiron and the basketball court on Saturday and things should remain interesting on Sunday, as four Big Ten teams get back into action on the hardwood. Michigan and Rutgers figure to have the most intriguing matchups.

Let’s take a look at the schedule.

Game of the Day:

-Hofstra Pride at No. 24 Rutgers Scarlet Knights

  • Time/TV: 4:00PM ET (BTN)
  • KenPom Spread: Rutgers by 15

Rutgers played two games earlier this week and the Scarlet Knights went 2-0 in those matchups, winning each by at least 20 points. However, things will get more challenging on Sunday as Rutgers faces off against what projects to be a decent Hofstra team. The Pride have yet to play a game this season, but are coming off a 26-8 campaign where the team figured to make the NCAA Tournament before the season got cancelled.

There’s little debating Rutgers will be favored at tip. The Scarlet Knights are the deeper and more experienced team. However, with Geo Baker potentially sidelined with injury, this could be more interesting than some think. Baker was out for the team’s matchup against Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday. Expect Montez Mathis and Paul Mulcahy to get more minutes with him on the sidelines.

The matchup to watch will be in the backcourt to see how Mathis and Mulcahy hold up against players like Jalen Ray. Tareq Coburn is another player to watch for the Pride. If Rutgers can cruise here, expect a big year for the Scarlet Knights.

  • Pick: Hofstra

The Rest:

-UMass Lowell River Hawks at No. 23 Ohio State Buckeyes

  • Time/TV: 12:00 PM ET (BTN)
  • KenPom Spread: Ohio State by 12

This one doesn’t look particularly intriguing on paper. Ohio State enters as a substantial favorite and should win comfortably. However, UMass Lowell is looking a lot better the last few days. The River Hawks beat San Francisco earlier this week, who went on to upset Virginia. As such, maybe there’s a little reason for concern. Keep an eye on Obadiah Noel, who should lead UMass Lowell in this one.

  • Pick: Ohio State

-Mount St. Mary’s at Maryland Terrapins

  • Time/TV: 2:00 PM ET (BTN)
  • KenPom Spread: Maryland by 19

After two impressive showings, Maryland looks to add a third victory on Sunday with a win over Mount St. Mary’s at home. The Mountaineers enter this game at 161st on KenPom and 1-1 after beating Morgan State on Wednesday and losing to Navy on Saturday. Players to keep an eye on are Damian Chong Qui and Malik Jefferson.

  • Pick: Maryland

-Oakland Golden Grizzlies at the No. 25 Michigan Wolverines

  • Time/TV: 6:00 PM ET (BTN)
  • KenPom Spread: Michigan by 16

This might not look particularly intriguing on paper, but there are some reasons to be interested in this matchup. To start, Michigan looks to followup a quietly good win over Bowling Green earlier this week where the team’s newcomers did quite a bit of damage. And secondly, throwing an in-state rival into an empty Crisler makes this one even more unpredictable. Players to watch for Oakland are Jalen Moore and Micah Parrish.

  • Pick: Michigan
