The Big Ten had two games on Friday night and both ended with the road team coming out on top. In the early game, Wisconsin pulled off a major upset of Ohio State. Rutgers took care of Nebraska later on.
Let’s take a look at what happened.
Game of the Night:
-Wisconsin Badgers 61, No. 5 Ohio State Buckeyes 57
After last Sunday’s loss to West Virginia in Cleveland, many Buckeye fans were hoping the team could bounce back at home against an inconsistent Wisconsin team. The Badgers had shown some remarkable potential and were playing really well, but also had some tough losses away from home as well. It figured to be an interesting battle for both teams.
During the matchup, both teams fought really well. Wisconsin pulled ahead in the first half, but Ohio State battled back in the second half. Ultimately, Wisconsin did just enough to pull out a massive upset on the road against a top five team. Nate Reuvers led the way with 17 points and nine rebounds.
For Wisconsin, this was an absolutely massive win. Winning on the road in the Big Ten is hard by itself, but this was on the road against a top five Ohio State team that already had wins over Kentucky and North Carolina. It also showed that Wisconsin’s road win against Tennessee last weekend wasn’t a fluke. The Badgers will hope to keep things going next Wednesday at home against Illinois.
On the other side, this is a tough one for Ohio State. Losing to a solid opponent like Wisconsin is one thing, but the Buckeyes have now lost three of five and don’t seem to be playing as well as they did a few weeks ago. The offense has become overly reliant on Kaleb Wesson again. We’ll see if the team can get things turned around next Tuesday on the road against Maryland.
The Rest:
-Rutgers Scarlet Knights 79, Nebraska Cornhuskers 62
Heading into this one, everything indicated Rutgers was the better team. The Scarlet Knights were playing well and Nebraska had been really vulnerable at home. Still, it was a chance for Rutgers to earn a road win over a Big Ten team. Something that’s easier said than done. And for Nebraska, it was a chance to pull off an upset. All told, Rutgers pulled away with a 17-point win over the Huskers.
Rutgers will now face Penn State at home on Tuesday night for a chance to its third top 25 KenPom win of the season. We’ll see if Geo Baker can make it back for that one. Meanwhile, Nebraska will hope to bounce back against Iowa at home on Tuesday.
