Redshirt freshman forward Anthony Higgs announced he was in the transfer portal on Tuesday this week. The story was first reported by IlliniInquirer.
The 2018 class member suffered a season-ending foot injury in August and redshirted last season.
Here is Higgs sharing the news on Twitter.
This move was just what was best for both the me and the University. I am extremely appreciative of the coaching staff as wel as the managers and my teammates. U of I will always hold a special place with me ❤️ https://t.co/B5xwrlcCkM

Higgs originally committed to Ole Miss, but reopened his commitment and signed with Illinois in summer of 2018. He also considered offers from Virginia Tech, Colorado, Cincinnati, Louisville, and Buffalo amongst others.
Take a look at some quick highlights of Higgs while in high school.
Unfortunately for Higgs, it appears the foot injury is still an ongoing issue. Coach Underwood spoke about Higgs in April and mentioned he wasn’t cleared to come back from the injury.
“He’s still not being cleared medically. Fighting a foot,” Underwood said. “At this point, that’s all we can talk about with Anthony.”
The move by Higgs leaves Illinois with essentially two scholarships for next season. The next potential domino could come with Stephen F. Austin’s 6-foot-8 forward TJ Holyfield. The forward is considering Texas Tech, Kansas, and Illinois. A decision could come as early as this weekend or early next week.
