The Big Ten only had one game on Super Bowl Sunday, but it was a fun one. Minnesota went on the road and nearly knocked off Purdue in Mackey. Both sides got some quality play from their stars, but the Boilermakers just had a little too much for the Gophers.
Let’s take a look at what happened.
Game of the Day:
-No. 17 Purdue Boilermakers 73, Minnesota Golden Gophers 63
Generally speaking, this game went as expected. Purdue was supposed to beat Minnesota at home. The Boilermakers were considered to be a better team and Mackey Arena remains one of the toughest places to play in the country. Few expected the Gophers to go on the road and pull off the upset.
However, Minnesota really came out swinging in this one. The Gophers led for quite some time and were in position to pull it out in the second half. Amir Coffey came up with 22 points and Daniel Oturu had 19 points and nine rebounds.
But in the final portions of the second half, Purdue found its shooters and were able to pull away. The Boilermakers improved to 16-6 with the win and moved atop the Big Ten regular season standings as a result. Purdue will now prepare for Nebraska at home on Saturday night. Meanwhile, Minnesota will hope to rebound against Wisconsin at home on Wednesday.
