The Big Ten released its weekly award winners for week five of the regular season and two teams ended up splitting the awards. Iowa’s Luka Garza was named Big Ten Player of the Week and Illinois’ Kofi Cockburn was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
Garza had a fantastic week of play, highlighted by his 44-point performance on the road against a top five Michigan team. While Iowa lost to the Wolverines, it was an incredible effort from the Hawkeye big man. This is the first time he has earned Big Ten Player of the Week honors. He earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors twice in his career.
Similarly, Cockburn had a big week as well, averaging 16.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in Illinois’ two games last week. Notably, this is the third time he has earned Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors.
Congratulations are in order for both players. Don’t be surprised if these two show back up on this list given how they have played to date.
