The Big Ten only had one game on Monday night, but it was an intriguing one as Minnesota went on the road to face Iowa. Both teams have shown some promise so far this season, but had suffered some tough losses as well. It was a big opportunity for both sides.
Let’s take a look at what happened.
Game of the Night:
-Iowa Hawkeyes 72, Minnesota Golden Gophers 52
While Iowa was a decent favorite prior to tip-off, I’m not sure anybody expected a 20-point win for the Hawkeyes. And even fewer probably expected it after Minnesota outscored Iowa during the first 10 minutes of game time. But either way, Iowa got the job done and walked away with a 72-52 win.
The win improved Iowa to 7-2 on the season and to 1-1 in Big Ten play heading into the team’s annual game against Iowa State on Thursday. Joe Wieskamp had a great performance with 23 points and six rebounds on Monday night and fans will hope he can keep that up going forward.
On the other side, Minnesota falls to 4-5 overall and 0-1 in Big Ten play with this loss. The Gophers have had one of the tougher schedules of any Big Ten team so far this season, but fans have to be starting to wonder whether Richard Pitino and his staff are going to get things figured out this year. While it’s only December, time is ticking and Minnesota really needs to start building its resume. Fans will hope that can start on Sunday as the Gophers play host to a red hot Ohio State team.
