The Spartans got some good news over the weekend as 2019 prospect Rocket Watts announced that he would be committing to Michigan State over a number of other programs. It was a major win for Tom Izzo and his staff after some recent struggles on the recruiting trail.

Watts is listed at 6-foot-1 and 174 pounds and spent three seasons at Old Redford Academy before transferring to SPIRE Academy in Ohio. He is now rated as a four-star prospect and as the top player in the state of Ohio by 247Sports. Along with Michigan State, he also received major interest from Alabama, Florida State, Illinois, Maryland, and Oregon among others. The Crystal Ball on 247Sports was split between the Spartans and Seminoles.
There is little denying that this is big news for Izzo and his staff. The program’s 2018 recruiting class wasn’t as highly regarded as the previous few years and some were wondering whether the program had slipped a tad. But landing a top 40 player like Watts will certainly work to dissuade the critics.
When Watts arrives on campus, Michigan State should have a number of pieces to put around him. Josh Langford and Cassius Winston should be seniors in the backcourt and players like Thomas Kithier and Xavier Tillman will have experience as well. The roster might not project to be as loaded as some of the recent groups, but there should be more than enough for Izzo and his staff to get the job done.
Nobody can be sure what Watts will do when he arrives in East Lansing, but fans have to be excited about what the future could hold.
