Purdue picked up their second commitment for 2019 with the news that 6’7” forward Mason Gillis has committed to the Boilermakers.

The Indiana native also had offers from a number of other marquee programs including Butler, Ohio State and Xavier before deciding to commit to Purdue. Gillis is a four-star recruit per 247Sports Composite rankings and is the 7th best in-state prospect for 2019, as well as the 122nd best prospect nationwide.

Originally Gillis planned on cutting down his list to three teams before making a final decision prior to his senior season. However, Purdue’s recruitment eventually won him over and he decided to commit to Purdue earlier than anticipated.

“I thought Purdue checked off all the boxes I wanted to check off between sports performance to Painter being the coach he is to academics,” Gillis said. “ I appreciated the way he recruited me and showed his belief in me.”

The 6’7” forward averaged 21.6 points, 12.2 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game during his junior season. The forward should bring some versatility to the court for Purdue as he’s shown the capability to shoot from beyond the arc (45.1% last season) while also shooting 59.5% from the field this past season.

Gillis joins three-star point guard Isaiah Thompson as the second player for Purdue’s 2019 recruiting class. Thompson, also an Indiana native, is former Purdue guard P.J. Thompson’s younger brother.
