The Big Ten released its weekly award winners for week one of the regular season and three teams ended up splitting the awards. Purdue’s Carsen Edwards and Wisconsin’s Ethan Happ were named Co-Big Ten Players of the Week and Maryland’s Jalen Smith was named Big Ten Freshman of the Week.
Edwards entered the season with plenty of hype and averaged 26.5 points, 3.5 assists, and 2.5 rebounds in the team’s first two wins to open the season. This is the third time that he has been named Big Ten Player of the Week in his career.
Similarly, Happ was expected by many to contend for All-Big Ten honors and showed why during the first week of the season. He had a trip-double in the team’s opener with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and 12 assists. This is the third time that he has been named Big Ten Player of the Week in his career.
Finally, the Freshman of the Week was Smith, who averaged 15 points and nine rebounds in Maryland’s opening wins. This is the first time he has been named Big Ten Freshman of the Week and is the first Terp to win the award since Bruno Fernando last year.
