2017-2018 Week 12 Rankings Reaction: Ohio State Keeps Creeping Up

NCAA Basketball: Ohio State at Northwestern Kamil Krzaczynski-USA TODAY Sports

Nothing too surprising happened this week in the Big 10. The good teams won and the bad teams lost. Although it was a relatively boring week for the conference, they continue to hold four spots in the top 25. Purdue keeps on cementing themselves as one of the nation’s most dominant teams, Michigan State was able to rebound from their stumbles, and Ohio State cracked the top 15 with their continued excellent play.

While this conference is beginning to feel a little top heavy, let’s take a look at how the polls are treating them.

Week 12 AP Poll

  • No 3. Purdue
  • No 6. Michigan State
  • No 13. Ohio State
  • No 25. Michigan

Week 12 Coaches’ Poll

  • No 3. Purdue
  • No 6. Michigan State
  • No 13. Ohio State
  • No 25. Michigan

Reaction

-Purdue stays in top three

While it is certainty possible to make an argument that Purdue is playing like the best team in the nation, their number three ranking in both polls is fair. In a season where it felt like there was not one true alpha dog, Villanova and Virginia have proven to be just as dominant as the Boilermakers. Nova has beaten their last two opponents by a combined 52 points, while Virginia has navigated the murky waters of the ACC without a blemish yet. An argument can be made for all three of these teams to warrant the tops spot, but both Nova and Virginia have just one loss compared to Purdue’s two. I would be surprised if any of these teams went the rest of the year undefeated, so it will be interesting to see if these teams can grab a number one seed come march.

-Michigan State regains confidence

A home game against a woeful Indiana team is exactly what the doctor ordered for the Spartans to snap out of their funk. While they are no longer feared as the conference’s best team, the Spartans have way too much talent to not be considered a top 10 team in the country. Their win on Saturday was important, as they were able to get their guys going and regain some confidence. For a second, it looked as though Nick Ward was beginning to fall off, but he managed to get 18 points and 13 rebounds while shooting seven for nine from the field.

The battle for the big 10 title will be a tough one between them, Purdue and Ohio State.

-Ohio State continues to roll

Speaking of Ohio State, the Buckeyes rose in the ranks as they crack the top 15. Keita Bates-Diop continues his fantastic play, and remains as my current favorite to come away with Big Ten Player of the year honors. He had another double double, but was not alone in the victory over Minnesota, as three other buckeyes scored in double figures. Bates-Diop has a solid group around him, as they pose a serious threat to other top teams in the conference.

-Michigan stays ranked despite double digit loss

Michigan was the only ranked team in the conference to lose this week, yet they managed to just stay inside the top 25 in both polls. A lopsided defeat to Nebraska was not what they needed, but they were able to rebound over the weekend and dominate Rutgers. It is clear that Michigan does not have the same fire power as the other three teams above them, but they still retain that balanced attack that could prove dangerous any given night.
