Today’s countdown piece is going to be short and sweet.
It’s still relatively early in the recruiting period, and this statement is slightly misleading, but per 247Sports Rutgers has the ninth best recruiting class in the country right now for 2018. That puts them currently at fourth in the Big Ten, behind Michigan State (3rd), Minnesota (4th) and Maryland (7th).
Why is it misleading, though? Well it’s early enough into the 2018 recruiting period that a lot of teams have few commits so Rutgers having three verbal commits, including one four-star prospect, is boosting their ranking thanks to the volume of players currently committed.
That being said, it does nothing to diminish the fact that Steve Pikiell has done a strong job recruiting so far at Rutgers. The Scarlet Knights are coming off of a strong week that saw them land three-star guard Mac McClung earlier in the week, as well as four-star prospect Montez Mathis this weekend. Mathis is currently ranked as the 79th best prospect in the recruiting class and chose Rutgers over Uconn and Virginia Tech.
