On Tuesday morning, SBNation updated its bracketology for the 2016-’17 college basketball season and seven Big Ten teams were fortunate enough to make the cut. Although the conference doesn’t appear to be as loaded at the top as it has been in recent years, it still landed quite a few teams in this projected NCAA field.
While Indiana, Maryland, Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern, Purdue, and Wisconsin were the only teams to make the cut, Michigan was listed as the second team to miss the field.
Here is how the Big Ten was projected.
Big Ten In 2/7 SBNation Bracketology By Seed:
- #4 - Wisconsin
- #5 - Maryland
- #6 - Purdue
- #8 - Michigan State, Minnesota, Northwestern
- #11 - Indiana (First Four)
- First Four Out: Michigan
- Next Four Out: N/A
The Big Ten ranked second among conferences (behind the ACC and tied with the Big 12) for the most bids with seven teams. However, that was a relatively soft seven teams as none were projected as a three-seed or higher.
Perhaps the most interesting projection was Maryland as a five-seed and Purdue as a six-seed. Although the Terps have built an impressive record, it’s still odd to see the Boilermakers behind Maryland considering some of hte wins that Purdue has on its resume.
Indiana and Michigan’s spots were also interesting ones as the Hoosiers narrowly qualified and the Wolverines just missed out. How these two play in the coming weeks will be crucial.
