11/12 Big Ten Preview: Plenty of Sunday Action

Preview the Big Ten’s matchup for Sunday, including a possible upset special with Yale at Wisconsin.

NCAA Basketball: NCAA Tournament-Second Round-Wisconsin vs Villanova Mark Konezny-USA TODAY Sports

The first Sunday of the college basketball season is chock full of action across the Big Ten, with nine teams hitting the floor today. Each team opened the season on Friday night so this will be an opportunity to build off the success or failures experienced in the season opener.

Check out previews for every game on Sunday.

Big Ten Game of the Day:

-Yale Bulldogs at Wisconsin Badgers

  • Time/TV: 6:00PM ET - BTN
  • KenPom Spread: Wisconsin (-11)

Wisconsin looked pretty darn good in Friday night’s season-opening win, but then again, it was against South Carolina State. So what does that truly mean? Well, we at least got our first real look at the Ethan Happ-led Badgers and it looked pretty impressive. He finished with 20 points and 11 rebounds in the opener so that’s all good news for the Badgers.

Wisconsin’s next test against Yale on Sunday should be a little bit harder. The Bulldogs hung around with Big East foe Creighton on Friday, eventually losing 92-76. According to ESPN, Yale is one of the favorites in the Ivy League — which is generally a pretty competitive league — so this should be a decent early season matchup for Wisconsin.

Yale has some talent, but they lack size which will hurt them against a team like Wisconsin. This may be the game of the day, but ultimately this should still be an easy win for the Badgers, but do they cover? I think so.

  • Pick Against The Spread: Wisconsin

The Rest:

-Radford Highlanders at Ohio State Buckeyes

  • Time/TV: 2:30PM ET - BTN+
  • KenPom Spread: Ohio State (-11)

Ohio State dominated its season-opener against Robert Morris, winning by more than 30 points, but it wasn’t a perfect performance by any means — especially for Jae’Sean Tate. He finished with nearly as many turnovers as points — seven points versus six turnovers — so this will be an opportunity to avenge that poor performance with what should be another easy win.

  • Pick Against The Spread: Ohio State

-Central Connecticut State Blue Devils at Rutgers Scarlet Knights

  • Time/TV: 2:30PM ET - BTN+
  • KenPom Spread: Rutgers (-19)

So, Rutgers might have the easiest first two games of the year. The Scarlet Knights dominated City College of New York on Friday, winning by 56. Don’t expect Rutgers to win by that much again against Central Connecticut State, but it should be another easy victory. Something to watch: only one of Rutgers’ starters played more than 25 minutes in the opener so let’s see if they get some more time in this one for a more realistic view of this lineup.

  • Pick Against The Spread: Rutgers

-Chicago State Cougars at No. 20 Purdue Boilermakers

  • Time/TV: 4:00PM ET - BTN
  • KenPom Spread: Purdue (-31)

Chicago State didn’t stand much of a chance against Iowa on Friday night so nothing would suggest the Cougars would give Purdue a challenge either. Boilermakers roll in this one. Fun fact: Chicago State is a member in the Western Athletic Conference because that geographically makes sense.

  • Pick Against The Spread: Chicago State

-Alabama State Hornets at Iowa Hawkeyes

  • Time/TV: 4:05PM ET - BTN+
  • KenPom Spread: Iowa (-28)

Speaking of Iowa, how about those Hawkeyes! Iowa lit up the aforementioned Chicago State on Friday with a 95-62 victory. Four of Iowa’s five starters reached double digits in scoring, and that could be the case again vs. Alabama State. The Hornets — did you know Alabama State’s mascot is the Hornets — lost by 28 against Mississippi State on Friday and is ranked as the 338th team in the KenPom rankings. This should be another blowout.

  • Pick Against The Spread: Iowa

-Fairleigh Dickinson Knights at Penn State Nittany Lions

  • Time/TV: 5:00PM ET - BTN+
  • KenPom Spread: Penn State (-20)

How will Tony Carr follow-up his career-high 33 points in the season opener on Friday against Campbell? Based on Fairleigh Dickinson’s 22-point loss to Seton Hall on opening night, I think he could have another dominant performance.

  • Pick Against The Spread: Fairleigh Dickinson

-Tennessee-Martin Skyhawks at Illinois Fighting Illini

  • Time/TV: 6:00PM ET - ESPNU
  • KenPom Spread: Illinois (-14)

Who knows what to expect with this Illinois team. Last week, they lost to Eastern Illinois in an exhibition game, but on Friday, the Illini rolled to a 47-point win over Southern. Based on the KenPom ratings, Tennessee-Martin isn’t much worse than Eastern Illinois so this should be a close game, right? Who really knows this early in the season so I’ll go on the safe side and say Illinois will win but not by more than 14.

  • Pick Against The Spread: Tennessee-Martin

-Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks at Maryland Terrapins

  • Time/TV: 6:00PM ET - BTN+
  • KenPom Spread: Maryland (-26)

Is this a potential in-state rivalry? Well, these two teams have played 15 times before but the Terps have won all of those games. The most recent matchup was in 2015 when Maryland won by 21 points. Expect a similar result in this matchup.

  • Pick Against The Spread: Maryland-Eastern Shore

-Howard Bison at Indiana Hoosiers

  • Time/TV: 8:00PM ET - BTN
  • KenPom Spread: Indiana (-24)

Well, it didn’t go as the Hoosiers would have liked on Friday night in the season-opener. Far from it as Indiana State rolled to a 90-69 victory over Indiana. So yeah, not a great start to the Archie Miller era. But there’s good news...Howard is supposed to be really bad — ESPN ranked the Bison as the third worst team nationally in its preseason rankings. So, the Hoosiers should roll in this one.

  • Pick Against The Spread: Indiana
