Iowa basketball added an early commit to their 2019 class with the news that 6’8” small forward Patrick McCaffery has committed to the program.

McCaffery is a four-star forward that is ranked by 247Sports composite rankings as the 36th best recruit in 2019 and the ninth best small forward in the class. While the addition of McCaffery is definitely a big pick up for head coach Fran McCaffery, it’s not exactly a surprise since Patrick is his son.
While the versatile forward has been highly regarded when it comes to most recruiting services, with both Rivals and ESPN also listing him as a four-star prospect, he didn’t have that many offers from other programs. Of course the main reason for that was the assumption that he’d join his fathers program.
"Everybody kind of knew this was how it was going to be," said McCaffery.
McCaffery should provide the Hawkeyes with a capable perimeter shooter that can also distribute the ball when necessary. While he has plenty of athleticism, the junior is is currently working on gaining weight and increasing his upper body strength to help on the defensive side of the ball.
While the news that McCaffery committed to Iowa wasn’t a surprise, it does provide the Hawkeyes a strong foundation to build from in 2019. McCaffery is the highest rated recruit to head to Iowa City in quite some time and will provide his dad with a capable wing that fits the mold of players Fran has utilized over the years.
