On Friday afternoon, Michigan State got some massive news as major 2017 prospect Xavier Tillman opted to commit to the program. Michigan State has been trending up on the recruiting trail and picking up a commitment here was key.
According to 247Sports, Tillman is rated as the No. 1 player in the state of Michigan and as a four-star prospect overall. He’s currently listed at 6-foot-8 and 270 pounds and projects as the No. 20 power forward in the nation. Prep Hoops Michigan reflects this rating and has Tillman rated as the No. 1 player in the state.
During his recruitment, Tillman got interest from just about every midwestern school. He had offers from a plethora of programs, including Florida, Illinois, Kentucky, Marquette, and Notre Dame among others. To see him join the Big Ten is a major addition for the 2017-’18 season.
Tillman is a forceful player with a skillset that should translate really well to the next level. He’s athletic, strong, and more than capable of getting to the hoop. During his high school years, Tillman has shown the ability to play inside and should do more than enough damage in college.
With his commitment, Tillman becomes the second commitment in Michigan State’s 2017 recruiting class. He joins Jaren Jackson and what’s starting to look like a nationally elite class. Considering that these two are coming after one of the best Spartan classes in history, Michigan State could be set for a major run.
There’s no doubt that Tillman’s selection will disappoint some other Big Ten fans (mainly Purdue), but he should make a real mark in the Big Ten over the next few years and could help push Michigan State to new heights.
