The Minnesota Golden Gophers continue to attract the interest of highly touted recruits. Class of 2017 recruit Hasahn French has trimmed down his list of suitors to six. The list includes only one Big Ten team in Minnesota, but also names UNLV, Marquette, Saint Louis, VCU, and UMass as schools still being considered.
The 6’7”, 230 pound power forward hails from Springfield, Massachusetts and is heralded by ESPN as the fourth best player from the state and a top 40 power forward by both ESPN and 247sports. At his height, you might wonder if he’s a actually a wing or you might wonder if he’s just too small to play power forward, but his big body is an asset.
French is a traditional power forward that plays with physicality and is a big body in the interior. He plays with high motor and high energy, which is a boon to an undersized guy playing power forward. He also possesses a toughness and grittiness inside that makes him difficult to deal with at any size.
French attacks the ball in the air and it makes him an excellent rebounder. This tenacity translates into his offensive game as he is also a strong finisher at the rim. He can also handle the ball a bit and push the ball down the court.
247sports’ Crystal Ball has Minnesota tied with Saint Louis as the frontrunners to snag French at 40%. This would be a big pickup for the Golden Gophers. It’s been all downhill for Richard Pitino’s squad the last couple years, but they do have some young talent and depth and French’s arrival would only boost their future potential as well as provide toughness to a team ranked 173rd in KenPom’s adjusted defensive efficiency and 271st in rebouding rate.
