2017 Four-Star Center Commits To Maryland

The Terps land a key 2017 big man.

On Sunday afternoon, Maryland got some big news for its 2017 class as the program landed a commitment from a 2017 prospect Bruno Fernando. The Terps have been doing well on the recruiting class over the last few years and this is another commitment in that process.

According to ESPN, Fernando is rated as the No. 7 player in the state of Florida and a four-star prospect overall. He’s currently listed at 6-foot-9 and 217 pounds and projects as the No. 10 center in the nation.

Fernando didn’t quite get the offers that his rating would suggest, but he still got some major attention. He got offers from Alabama, LSU, , and UCF among others and did get scouting looks from many other programs.

With his commitment, Fernando becomes the first commitment in Maryland’s 2017 recruiting class. The Terps are still on a variety of other elite prospects, so Fernando will likely be joined by some great company in the months to come.

Fernando will likely start as a depth option in the frontcourt for Maryland next season, but with Damonte Dodd and LG Gill set to depart after this season, there should be plenty of opportunities for Fernando to get minutes. He should fit Michal Cekovsky for playing time.

There’s still plenty of time for Maryland to close its 2017 recruiting class, but with Fernando in the fold, things look to be in good shape heading forward.
