The Nebraska Cornhuskers recently dismantled the Minnesota Golden Gophers. The game showed that the Cornhuskers are certainly capable of beating down on some of the weaker teams in the Big Ten. Nebraska started Big Ten play 0-3, but now they are on a two game win streak in conference play after wins over the Rutgers Scarlet Knights and the Golden Gophers. They have won these past two games by at least 20 points, and their star players have been playing excellent.
Shavon Shields put up 24 points against the Golden Gophers and Andrew White III added 15 points himself. Both White and Shields have been as good as expected, but finding reliable scoring options from other players on the team has been a problem. The Cornhuskers eliminated that problem for a night with a very balanced scoring attack against the Golden Gophers. Overall, Nebraska had six total players that scored at least eight points or more in this contest. The team also received great production in the frontcourt from Ed Morrow Jr. and Michael Jacobson who went 6-8 from the field for the game.
It is great to see the Cornhuskers clicking as a team on both ends of the floor over the past two games, and even though these two wins might not be statement wins, these wins show that the Cornhuskers to have the weapons to make some noise, especially on the offensive end.
Outlook For Next Game
The Cornhuskers next game is against the Illinois Fighting Illini on the road. This is another winnable game, but Illinois is coming off a huge win over the Purdue Boilermakers. Hopefully, these past two wins for the Cornhuskers can translate into some type of momentum for their next game. The success of the frontcourt against the Golden Gophers was a positive sign for the team seeing that consistent offensive production from the frontcourt has been a problem for the Cornhuskers all season.
It is never easy to get road wins in the Big Ten, but this another great opportunity for the Cornhuskers to head in the right direction for the rest of the season. Both Shields and White always come to play, but the team is going to need some more help from players in the frontcourt like Jacobson and Morrow. Both Jacobson and Morrow never really have two good games back to back, but if they did have another good game against the Fighting Illini, then Nebraska should win this game.
Overall
So the Cornhuskers are finally starting to show some positive signs after back to back Big Ten wins. Yes, the two teams they beat were not very good, but maybe this can help the team get their swagger back. Their next game against Illinois is certainly a winnable game for the Cornhuskers and they are going to give the Fighting Illini all they got to try and take home a road victory. Not many players in the Big Ten are playing as good as Shavon Shields and Andrew White III, but the Cornhuskers are going to need a third option to step up if they want to win against Illinois.
Coach Tim Miles knows that these past two wins for the Cornhuskers were huge because now the Cornhuskers can use their winning momentum for games to come.
