Coveted Transfer Gibbs Visits Ohio State

Sterling Gibbs, the Seton Hall scoring guard whom ESPN currently ranks as the hottest transfer still left on the market, was scheduled to be in Columbus visiting Ohio State Thursday, and was still there Friday according to The Columbus Dispatch's buckeyextra.

After averaging 16.3 points, 3.8 assists, and shooting 43.6 percent from beyond the arc (good for ninth in the country) for the Pirates last season, Gibbs is graduating and would be eligible to play immediately. The second team all-Big East selection told ESPN that his final list was down to six schools: Pittsburgh, Ohio State, Connecticut, Baylor, North Carolina State and VCU.

Earlier in the week, Gibbs visited Pittsburgh where his older brother Ashton played college basketball. He's expected to make the trip to Storrs to visit UConn next before setting up visits at the other three schools. Some saw UConn as the early favorite, but none of those reports have been confirmed.

A three-star recruit out of Scotch Plains, N.J., Gibbs began his collegiate career with Texas. After just one year with the Longhorns, he transferred to Seton Hall, where he thrived for two seasons in the Big East after sitting out a year due to NCAA transfer rules.

Ohio State tried the graduate transfer route last season with limited success, as Forward Anthony Lee from Temple missed the final 11 games of the season with a groin injury.

Buckeye fans originally thought they might have two big-time transfer prospects on campus during the week, but Washington guard Nigel Williams-Goss announced several days ago that he's going to Gonzaga, so Thad Matta can now focus all his efforts on Gibbs. Unlike Gibbs, Williams-Goss is a sophomore and would have had to sit out a year before joining the team.

Despite some incoming freshman talent including highly-ranked Jaquan Lyle, with the departures of Jerry West Award (given to the nation's top shooting guard) winner D'Angelo Russell and senior Shannon Scott, there's plenty of room for an experienced guard on this team.

Other heralded transfers on ESPN's top 15 list considering big ten schools include:

Jonathan Williams III, Missouri - considering Michigan State, Gonzaga, Oregon, Georgetown, SMU

Tyler Harris, Providence - considering Nebraska, Boston College, UMass, Auburn, Iowa State, Oklahoma State, Georgia Tech, La Salle

Anton Grady, Cleveland State - considering Nebraska, Kansas, Kansas State, Iowa State, Xavier, Pittsburgh, Wichita State, Dayton, NC State

Josh Cunningham, Bradley - considering Michigan State, Minnesota, Purdue, Arizona, DePaul, Notre Dame, St. John's, South Carolina, UIC, Dayton, Colorado State

Eli Carter, Florida - considering Rutgers, St. John's, Clemson, NC State, Boston College, Seton Hall, Georgetown, Georgia Tech, Nevada, Long Beach State, Creighton, Iona, DePaul

Tomasz Gielo, Liberty - considering Nebraska, Ole Miss, Kansas State, Boise State, Nevada, Marquette, BYU, Vanderbilt
