The Michigan State Spartans are going to be one of the best teams in the Big Ten next season, and the team will have a very impressive frontcourt. The Spartans did lose their frontcourt star in Branden Dawson, but the team is hopeful that a key newcomer in Deyonta Davis will have a big season. The team is also welcoming back some frontcourt players from last year that should help the Spartans compete with some of the better teams around the country.
Old players and new players will make up a talented frontcourt for the Spartans next year. Let's take a look at what to expect from the position group this season.
Deyonta Davis: Freshmen
Davis is a 4-star recruit from the class of 2015 that will immediately make an impact for the Spartans next season. He is a 6-foot-10 power forward that plays way above the rim. He has great low-post moves, and he can even step out and shoot mid-range jumpshots and three-point shots. He will not be a stretch-four the Spartans next season, but he does have the ability to step out. He must improve on his three-point shooting if he ever wants to become a dangerous stretch-four. Davis makes a huge impact on the glass and as a rim-protector as well because of his elite athleticism.
Look for Davis to be the go-to scorer in the frontcourt for the Spartans next season because of his athleticism and scoring variety.
Matt Costello: Senior
Costello has been a great glue guy for the to Spartans the past couple seasons, and during his senior year he will be asked to be a little more than just a glue guy. He did average 7.0 PPG and 5.2 RPG last season, and this year he might be asked to score a little more. He will not be asked to score that much because he really only scores when he is very close to the rim, but he will play crucial minutes in the frontcourt for the Spartans next season.
Gavin Schilling: Junior
Schilling is another frontcourt player that is familiar with the Spartans' system, and he is really looked at as a high-energy player that adds great poise on the floor. Both Costello and Schilling are looked at as huge energy guys for the Spartans, they both makes plays that try to swing momentum in the Spartans' direction. Schilling is a pretty good defender and rebounder, but he is not too great of a scorer, but he should be able to improve on that next season since he will have a bigger role on the team.
Schilling should be able to swing games with his big play ability, and sometimes his plays will be able to win games for the Spartans.
Overall
Davis, Costello, and Schilling are going to be the key frontcourt players for the Spartans next season. Both Davis and Costello will be called on the most because of their versatility on both ends of the floor. Schilling will also make an impact for the Spartans off the bench. Davis could one of the top scorers for the Spartans next season, and he is going to be one of the better frontcourt players in the Big Ten if he lives up to his expectations. Walk-on Kenny Goins is also a player that could get a few minutes here and there.
The Spartans frontcourt is strong enough to make them one of the best teams in the Big Ten.
