It was a bit of a quieter week in the Big Ten, but it was the first week that featured rematches in conference play and also featured some marquee games involving top teams like Iowa, Maryland, Michigan State, and Ohio State. As such, there was a lot of movement in the Big Ten. As of Tuesday morning, Maryland led the Big Ten at 5-1.
The BTPowerhouse Week 10 Big Ten Power Rankings consisted of 25 voters. A total of 15 voters came from the BTPowerhouse staff. The remaining 10 votes came from SBNation's Big Ten team sites. These sites included: Black Heart Gold Pants, Black Shoe Diaries, The Champaign Room, Crimson Quarry, Hammer & Rails, Inside NU, Land Grant Holy Land, Maize & Brew, On The Banks, and Testudo Times. With that, here are the BTPowerhouse Week 10 Big Ten Power Rankings:
Big Ten Week 10 Power Rankings
#1 - Wisconsin (Average 1.4)
The Badgers once again stay at #1, but the margin is razor thin. They pulled off an impressive win over Nebraska last week to get back on track after their loss to Rutgers. They get some bigger challenges this week with Iowa at home and then a road game at Michigan. With Traevon Jackson still out, things may get tricky.
#2 - Maryland (Average 1.6)
The Terrapins continued playing well with home wins over Michigan State and Rutgers last week. The Scarlet Knights did test Maryland early, but the Terps ended up pulling away by the end. Melo Trimble continues to play like one of the best freshmen in the conference. They get Indiana and Northwestern this week.
#3 - Iowa (Average 3.4)
The Hawkeyes moved up to #3 in the conference after knocking off an impressive road win over Minnesota and a home win to sweep Ohio State. Iowa is still relatively inconsistent, but they are putting together a pretty solid resume and look like one of the stronger teams in the conference.
#4 - Michigan State (Average 4.3)
The Spartans slid down a spot this week after losing pretty handily to Maryland on the road. Still, considering that it was a tough road environment against one of the better teams in the country, Michigan State fans have a lot to be hopeful about. They get Nebraska and Penn State this week.
#5 - Indiana (Average 4.5)
The Hoosiers sit at #5 this week after knocking off a home win over Penn State and a road win over Illinois. Though on paper their win over Illinois will not look that impressive, it was a big win over a team that has given Indiana a lot of trouble in recent years in a really great environment. They get Maryland and Ohio State this week in what will be one of the most challenging weeks of the season for Indiana.
#6 - Ohio State (Average 5.9)
The Buckeyes moved down to #6 this week after splitting their games against Iowa and Michigan last week. Though Ohio State is gradually starting to look better, they still remain a team that does very well against weaker teams and has struggled against top end teams. Their best win of the season could very well be an overtime win against a Minnesota team that is 1-5 in conference play, which is pretty telling.
#7 - Purdue (Average 7.2)
The Boilermakers sit at #7 this week after winning their lone game against Penn State on the road. It was a big win for a Purdue team that has had some trouble with Penn State recently. Now, with winnable games against Illinois and Iowa this week, Purdue could be lined up nicely to make a run up the standings.
#8 - Michigan (Average 8.4)
The Wolverines moved down to #8 this week after splitting their games against Northwestern and Ohio State. Michigan did look like they could be rounding the corner on their performance, but with the loss of star guard Caris LeVert, Michigan could be tumbling down the standings very soon.
#9 - Illinois (Average 8.7)
The Illini looked like they were in prime position to move up the standings this week early in their game against Indiana, but the wheels fell off and they ended up going 1-1 last week against Indiana and Northwestern. Now, Illinois moves on to Minnesota and Purdue.
#10 - Nebraska (Average 10.2)
The Cornhuskers got smashed in their only game this week on the road against a really good Wisconsin team, but considering the difficulty of that game, they still look solid at #10 this week. They get Minnesota and Michigan State at home this week.
#11 - Minnesota (Average 10.4)
The Golden Gophers finally got their first conference win against Rutgers. The Gophers have to go to Nebraska and face Illinois at home this week, but they look in prime position to score a few more conference wins.
#12 - Rutgers (Average 12.2)
The Scarlet Knights lost both of their games this week on the road against Maryland and Minnesota, but they continue to progress and have been playing much, much better. They get Michigan and Penn State this week.
#13 - Northwestern (Average 13.16)
The Wildcats came up just short of Illinois and Michigan last week, but have been playing really tight games against some solid teams both at home and away. They get Maryland and Ohio State this week.
#14 - Penn State (Average 13.5)
The Nittany Lions continue to disappoint and remain winless in conference play after a loss to Purdue. They get Michigan State and Rutgers this week.
