Hoosier Nation has been worrying about the 2015 class for a while as Indiana had yet to land a commitment. That is no longer the case as four star power forward Juwan Morgan decided to commit to the Hoosiers today over Vanderbilt and had previously been recruited by Washington, Stanford, and Creighton. In the 247Sports Composite Index, he comes in as a four star ranked #88 overall which puts him at the #20 power forward and #2 player in Missouri.
Morgan is listed at 6'8" 220 pounds, and while the height seems a little stretched (likely includes two inches of hair) - he should be the presence down low that Indiana desperately is looking for. Indiana is about to enter the 2014-15 season without a proven presence down low and it is certainly possible that no one will emerge this year leaving next year wide open as far as playing time is concerned which would be great for Morgan. Even if someone does emerge on the current roster, this commitment would provide depth down low that the Hoosiers haven't had in recent years.
Here is a video of Morgan's play in this summer's Nike EYBL:
Morgan shows a great ability to get to the rim, but at the same time step back and hit a short to mid-range jump shot which is exactly what you want to see from this type of player. He also seems to have a reasonable hands and clearly as a great vertical ability as well. We don't get a great idea of his defensive ability in this video, but you rarely do in AAU play. When all is said and done, I expect Morgan to come in and immediately be an impact player for the Hoosiers.
One thing to keep in mind is that Indiana has no current scholarships on paper. It will be interesting to see if Coach Crean now continues to recruit F O.G. Anunoby and G Shake Milton who are both scheduled to visit later this month. Milton is an AAU teammate with Morgan and the two have talked about potentially playing together in college. However, for every commitment now, Hoosier fans are going to start to wonder what that means for the current roster which includes no seniors. I have previously mentioned that I think Indiana will take three in this class. With the late commitment of Emmitt Holt in the 2014 class, I would now believe that number will be two - and I think the priority will now be placed on Milton over Anunoby. It will be very interesting to see how this plays out over the next few months.
