Minnesota 81 Lehigh 62 Game Recap

Pitino wins his first game at Minnesota.

USA TODAY Sports

The Gophers will look considerably different in Richard Pitno's first season compared to the last few years under Tubby Smith. Tonight saw transfer Joey King lead the way, as the Drake transfer scored 20 points in 27 minutes. King shot 6 of 10 from the field and added 6 free throws on 8 attempts.

Also playing a big role in the offense were the Hollins brothers, combining for 29 points on the night. Elliot Eliason might have been the most impressive player on the night, though, as the center scored 11 points and recorded a whopping 17 rebounds. Also of note was Deandre Mathieu, a Morehead State transfer that led the team in assists with 9.

The game tonight was a nice touch on a day that was going pretty poorly for Minnesota. Earlier in the day the team saw forward Maurice Walker get suspended for six games. Besides the Walker suspension, the Gophers saw four star forward Reid Travis commit to Stanford. The Minnesota native is ranked as the 40th best 2014 recruit by Rivals and many expected him to stay home and commit to the Gophers. However, Travis decided to head west out to Stanford.

The Gophers will host Montana on Tuesday for their second game of the season.
