The Hoosiers will open their season versus Chicago State, who oddly enough just joined the Western Athletic Conference this season. Last season the Cougars finished a lowly 11-22 in the last season of the Great West Conference. However, Chicago State won the conference tournament and ended up making a post season appearance in the CIT, losing their first game to UIC by 11 points. Chicago State's offense fared poorly last season against a relatively easy schedule and will have its hands full against a hungry Hoosier squad looking to create their own legacy now that Cody Zeller and Victor Oladipo have departed. Chicago State faced one Big Ten squad last season, Ohio State, and ended up falling 44-87.

The opening game will allow Hoosier fans to get their first look at highly coveted big Noah Vonleh, as well as transfer Evan Gordon. Indiana's talent is vastly superior to Chicago State so this game will likely be used to work on seeing which rotations pan out the best and to gain some experience for the freshman. Crean's biggest task right now is to figure out who will replace the production Zeller and Oladipo posted last season and this matchup will allow for plenty of experimentation and chances to empty the bench.
