The Buckeyes have added four star power forward Payton Dastrup to their 2014 recruiting class. Dastrup joins a loaded 2014 class that includes Keita Bates-Diop, D'Angelo Russell, Jae'Sean Tate and David Bell. The recruiting class is currently one of the best in the nation, with 247 Sports listing it as the best Big Ten recruiting class and third best class in the nation (behind only Kentucky and North Carolina).
There was some chatter over Dastrup's odds of landing at BYU, but he ended up deciding to head east to Columbus. Also in the mix for the four star forward were Virginia and Florida, while schools such as Arizona, Kansas and UCLA all offered. 247 Composite lists Dastrup as the 95th best recruit in the 2014 class and as a top 20 power forward. The addition of Dastrup and Bell should provide the Buckeyes with plenty of options in the frontcourt down the line and helps balance out a class heavy on wings.
It should be noted, though, that while Dastrup is part of the 2014 class, he could participate in a two year mission trip that would keep him from Ohio State until 2016, allowing Dastrup to potentially be a strong recruit for Ohio State a few years down the line.
When Dastrup joins the Buckeyes he should be a viable option down low. Dastrup has shown the ability to score inside and runs the floor very well for a big. He's a capable passer that could be utilized in a variety of situations, though his defense is in need of some improvement.
