There's A New #1 In Town: MSU & The Big Ten In The Rankings This Week

After an impressive win by MSU last week against Kentucky, the Spartans have jumped up to #1 in the rankings. How did the rest of the Big Ten fare?

After a pretty good week for the Big Ten, the performance has been reflected in the polls coming out this week.  The only ranked team in the Big Ten to lose last week was Michigan as they went down to Iowa State.  MSU recorded a win over Kentucky, OSU beat Marquette, and Wisconsin beat Florida.  Things are looking good for the B1G right now.  Here are how the Big Ten teams fared in the Week 3 rankings:

AP Poll:

  • #1 - Michigan State
  • #8 - Ohio State
  • #12 - Wisconsin
  • #14 - Michigan
  • Receiving Votes: Iowa, Indiana
  • #1 - Michigan State
  • #8 - Ohio State
  • #13 - Michigan
  • #15 - Wisconsin
  • #22 - Indiana
  • #25 - Iowa
  • Receiving Votes: None

The other thing worth mentioning is the comparison between the Big Ten and the other conferences.  Right now, the Big Ten is doing the best in the polls Here are how the conferences fared:

  • AAC - 3 teams ranked
  • ACC - 3 teams ranked
  • B1G - 4 & 6 teams ranked
  • Big East - 2 & 1 team(s) ranked
  • Big 12 - 4 & 3 teams
  • Pac 12 - 3 teams
  • SEC - 2 teams
What is perhaps the most interesting is the underwhelming play of the ACC so far this season.  They were projected by many to be the nation's strongest conference after adding 3 teams in the offseason.  However, they trail the Big Ten and Big 12 in teams ranked although they are even with the two conferences in number of Top 10 teams.
