What many had been expecting since he was suspended by Minnesota coach Tubby Smith a few days ago became official on Wednesday when Devoe Joseph was granted a transfer release from the school.
Joseph had been averaging 11.3 points per game this season as well as 3.5 assists and 2.3 rebounds, so the Golden Gophers will be losing that production. They'll also lose an important ball handler and veteran presence in their back court. Smith was sad to see Joseph go.
"We are disappointed that Devoe has decided to leave the University of Minnesota," said Smith. "He was a big part of this team and will always be a member of the Gopher Basketball family. We wish him the best of luck."
Joseph did not play in Minnesota's first six games this season and the Gophers managed a 71-62 win without him on Wednesday night against Indiana at Williams Arena. They'll next test their depth without him when they travel to Columbus to face No. 2 Ohio State on Sunday.
