Wisconsin Blows by the Baylor Bears

Harry How

Wisconsin and Frank Kaminsky had no problems with Baylor as they march on to the Elite 8.

Wisconsin came into this game as four point favorites in Vegas, and they did not disappoint. Baylor had been dominant thus far in the tournament as they dismantled Nebraska and Creighton in their first two games. Keep in mind that was the same Nebraska team which beat Wisconsin in the final game of the B1G regular season.

Wisconsin got off to a quick start with an 8-2 lead going into the first television timeout which was driven by six quick points from Frank Kaminsky who kept finding holes in the Baylor zone. With 9 minutes to go in the first half, the lead had risen to 18-8 after Ben Brust and Sam Dekker hit from long range. Kaminsky had 2 blocks in this stretch and was the key factor in Baylor starting the game 3-15 from the field.

The Badgers moved the lead out to 25-11 with 3:30 to go in the first half which was capped on a drive by Nigel Hayes that drew Isiah Austin's second foul to put him on the bench. This sparked Hayes who went on a tear to close the half. He scored 6 straight points and had 5 rebounds as the Badgers took a 29-16 lead into the half in Anaheim.

The second half started with more of the same - flawless passing leading to a Dekker dunk followed by a layup and free throw by Kaminsky to run the lead to 34-16. Wisconsin then did what Wisconsin always does so well - play smart with the basketball, get good shots, and play tremendous defense. Midway through the second half Kaminsky was up to 5 blocks in the game to go along with his 15 points. Every time Baylor tried to make a run, the Badgers would have the answer on the other end and the lead was still 17 points at the 12 minute television timeout.

The Wisconsin teams of old would have been lucky to score 50 points in an entire game, but the Badgers held a 56-36 lead with 7 minutes to go in this one. That is the major difference between this team and the teams that have consistently failed in the past in the NCAA Tournament. There is no doubt this is the best team Bo Ryan has ever had the luxury of coaching. The final seven minutes of this one weren't any different than the first 33 minutes as the game ended 69-52 as the Bears never even really put up a fight in this one.

Wisconsin will now advance to face either Arizona or San Diego State for a chance at the Final Four and if Frank Kaminsky is going to put up 19 points, 6 blocks, and 4 boards again while Ben Brust cans 3 three pointers and totals 14 points - Wisconsin fans have to feel pretty good about their chances.
