BTT Outlook: Nebraska - Huskers Looks To Move Off Bubble For NCAA Bid

Eric Francis

Do the Huskers have the firepower to make a run in the B1G tournament, and do they have enough to make the NCAA tournament?

Nebraska Basketball. Nebrasketball, as some people have started calling it, is alive and well. Tim Miles has done an absolutely tremendous job with this program in his two seasons, and they are on the verge of making the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1998. Nebraska is far from a basketball program, only having 6 NCAA appearances in their entire history, but something special is going on in Lincoln. The Huskers are 15-1 at home this season, and had an absolutely raucous crowd for their final home game of the year against Wisconsin. That win against the Badgers not only gave them another huge win for their tournament resume, but also locked up the #4 seed in the B1G tournament and a first round bye.

Nebraska has the ability to play with any team in the B1G, and potentially any team in the country. The Huskers have a do-everything guard in Terran Petteway, a great small forward in Shavon Shields, and a stretch 5 with a great shooting touch in Walter Pitchford. They play very tough defense and don't make too many mistakes on offense. The key for Nebraska is having games where all three players are playing up to their potential. If they can consistently do that, they could be a tough out in the tournament.

As for their draw, Nebraska is lucky in that Michigan State, Wisconsin and Iowa are all on the other side of the bracket. They should be able to take care of the winner of the Ohio State/Purdue winner in the first game, but come up against a very tough Michigan team. Nebraska did lose 71-70 to the Wolverines earlier this year, but they are a significantly improved team and are playing their best basketball at the right time. I don't expect them to beat Michigan, but if they can win their first round matchup and are able to get two wins in the B1G tournament, it should bode very well for their NCAA tournament hopes.
