Penn State 74 Wagner 62 Game Recap

Brian Spurlock-US PRESSWIRE

Frazier scores 25 in his first game back in action.

The Nittany Lions welcomed back Tim Frazier to the starting lineup and the senior didn't disappoint in his first game in almost a year.

Frazier got off to a bit of a slow start from the field, but picked it up in the second half on his way to a team-high 25 points. Frazier also recorded 10 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal today. D.J. Newbill, who broke out last season following the Frazier injury, kept pace with last seasons production. The junior added 18 points and a team-high 11 rebounds for Penn State on 5 of 11 shooting from the field. Frazier and Newbill were the only Penn State players to record double digits in scoring and accounted for almost half of the teams rebounds.

Penn State will definitely welcome the return of Frazier, especially if the rest of the starting lineup has more games similar to this one. Forwards Ross Travis, Donovon Jack and Brandon Taylor combined to shoot 5 of 20 from the field and had a combined 12 rebounds. Past that the bench added only 10 points.

Penn State definitely benefited from limiting their turnovers, only committing 6 on the day. They also benefited from the rule changes as the Nittany Lions shot 43 free throws, making 30 of them.

Wagner had a rough day from the field, only hitting on 29.9% of their field goals. The Seahawks were an even worse 2 of 23 from beyond the arc and got into foul trouble with Naofall Folahan and Orlando Parker fouling out, while Kennith Ortiz and Nolan Long had four fouls. Ortiz led the team in scoring with 20 points, 9 of which came from the free throw line. The only other player to score in double digits was Latif Rivers, adding 12 points.

Each team got off to a slow start, with it taking Penn State over eight minutes to reach double digits and Wagner over 12 minutes. Penn State opened up a double digit lead before Wagner cut the game back down to 5 with less than 13 minutes left. The Nittany Lions put up a quick 7-1 run to get it back to double digits and kept the game out of reach the rest of the way.

Penn State will host Bucknell on Wednesday for their next game.
